The change
For eligible employees starting from 1 November 2021 who do not choose a fund, employers generally need to request stapled fund details from the ATO. The standard choice guidance explains when a default fund can be used after the ATO response.
Where the process breaks
A payroll operator may receive a start date and bank details while fund information is still missing. Automatically assigning the default fund can bypass a required step. The issue can remain hidden if the onboarding checklist only asks whether a fund field is populated.
A stronger handover
Track the choice request, employee response, stapled-fund enquiry where required, and the resulting payroll instruction. Restrict access to fund information and ensure responsibility for follow-up is clear before the first relevant contribution is due.
How SESAY can help
SESAY can build this sequence into onboarding checks and maintain an exception list for unresolved fund details. Requests and submissions are performed only through the agreed authorised process.
